Abstract
This paper considers the problem of optimal design of elastic beam-lik e structures with unspecified location and stiffness of hinges and sup ports. Sensitivity analysis for an arbitrary behavioral functional is carried out, using the direct and adjoint approaches. Relevant optimal ity conditions are discussed for the assumed objective functional. Sim ple examples illustrate the theory.
