A patient with bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) as
sociated with acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is described, Alth
ough mycoplasmas have occasionally been associated with bronchiolitis
obliterans, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first well-docum
ented case of BOOP associated with M. pneumoniae infection. The diagno
sis of BOOP was made by open-lung biopsy after fiberoptic transbronchi
al biopsy proved nondiagnostic. Corticosteroid therapy was administere
d and a dramatic improvement was observed; the patient remained withou
t complaints during a S-year follow-up period.
