This is a social study analysing factors which stimulate or otherwise
determine the position of women in the labour market in the Czech Repu
blic. In discussing various aspects of the division of labour between
men and women, and gender aspects of the male versus female segregatio
n, the main focus of the study lies in the following elements: social
characteristics which shape and profile typically male and female prof
essions, gender inequalities in the labour market, women outside the l
abour market and the social stratification of working women. In additi
on, the position of women in the labour market is analysed from the po
int of view of strategies and perspectives of working women, their soc
ial behaviour and attitudes. The objective of the study is to map the
gender 'petrifaction' of the Czech labour market and to contrast it wi
th the proposed approximation of legal systems and labour regulations
to those of the European Union countries. Methodologically, the study
relies on quantitative data from the representative sociological surve
y ''Men and Women in the Labour Market'' and qualitative studies of se
lected male and female professions.
