The essential oil from the shoots of the marine embryophyte, Zostera m
al ina was prepared by simultaneous distillation-extraction. Volatile
compounds in the oil were identified by GC and GC-mass spectrometry. T
he major constituents were phytol, hexadecanamide, octadecanamide, pen
tadecane, heptadecane, nonadecane, (8Z, 11Z)-heptadecadienal (HDD), (8
Z)-heptadecenal (HD), (9Z, 12Z, 15Z)-octadecatrienal and (9Z, 12Z)-oct
adecadienal, HDD and HD were shown to be formed enzymatically from lin
oleic acid and oleic acid, respectively. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd
