Abstract
Directed ortho dilithiation of diaryls like diphenyl ether, diphenyl s ulfide, diphenyl sulfone, and N-methyl diphenyl amine were carried out to generate the corresponding o,o'-dilithio-diaryls in excellent yiel ds. Reaction of these dilithio species with appropriate ester moieties was utilized to synthesize tricyclic compounds based on the xanthenol , thioxanthenol, and acridan skeletons.
