Since its identification in neurons of the central nervous systems (CN
S), serotonin (5-HT) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of psy
chiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, depression, generalized anx
iety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), and obsessive-compulsive dis
order (OCD). These findings have stimulated research on brain 5-HT pat
hways, especially during the last two decades as more selective drugs
have been introduced into medical practice. This article reviews selec
ted topics relevant for psychiatry.
