Ag. Hargreaves et D. Mahdjoub, SATELLITE TELEVISION VIEWING AMONG ETHNIC-MINORITIES IN FRANCE, European journal of communication, 12(4), 1997, pp. 459-477
Minority ethnic viewers originating in Islamic countries are more dens
ely equipped with satellite television receivers than the majority pop
ulation in France. Very little research has so far been conducted on t
he impact of satellite channels. This article is based on a qualitativ
e survey conducted among 115 Viewers in 30 minority ethnic households,
mainly of Maghrebi origin. Respondents were asked what they had expec
ted of satellite programmes, how their viewing habits had changed with
the installation of satellite receivers and how this had affected per
sonal and family attitudes. The findings reveal major differences betw
een first- and second-generation minority ethnic viewers, as well as s
ignificant variations related to gender.
