Sodium weeksite has been synthesized at 185 degrees C (1.3 MPa) from q
uartz, NaCl and uranylnitrate by a new method avoiding local supersatu
ration of silicate species in solution. Synthetic weeksite was synthes
ized from sodium weeksite by ion exchange. The unit cell parameters ar
e determined for both synthetic weeksites and are very close to each o
ther. The infrared spectra indicate the presence of ordered and disord
ered water molecules.
