The Universities Research Reactor, commissioned in 1964, was used for
postgraduate training and research. In 1991 the reactor was shut down
and BNFL was contracted to decommission the reactor and restore the si
te to 'green field' status. This paper discusses the successful comple
tion of the three decommissioning stages involved in the operation, an
d also the delicensing of the site, which was the final stage of the o
verall programme.
