In this presentation the interaction between a solid surface and the v
ibrating tip of an extensional-mode quartz resonator in the presence o
f a gaseous ambient is discussed. Thereby, new approaches to the behav
iour of the gas dynamics within the gap are used for the first time fo
r this quartz resonator. New results will be presented, which approxim
ate the measured behaviour of the quality factor as a function of dist
ance, gas pressure and viscosity better than the model presented previ
