Abstract
The theory of order-disorder phase transitions is discussed for system s with a four-well potential. It is shown that the model can be genera lized to the case of the well-known Ising model in a transverse field. It is also shown that two or three crystalline phases can emerge as t he temperature is reduced. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
