Abstract
The paper considers the sensing of ocean surface slopes using a laser altimeter fitted on a spacecraft. A formula is obtained for the drop i n the level of the ocean, measured from the difference in the delays o f laser echo pulses. It is shown that the accuracy with which the drop in level is measured depends strongly on the speed of the driving win d and the slope of the surface.
