Rt. Wilcox et Lw. Traverso, HAVE THE EVALUATION AND TREATMENT OF ACUTE APPENDICITIS CHANGED WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY, The Surgical clinics of North America, 77(6), 1997, pp. 1355
Improvement in outcomes has not been demonstrated with routine use of
new technology. Newer imaging modalities to assist in the diagnosis of
appendicitis are most cost effective when ordered by the surgical con
sultant. Treatment of acute appendicitis continues to be early surgica
l intervention, although laparoscopic appendectomy may offer advantage
s in women of childbearing age and obese individuals. Routine laparosc
opic appendectomy is not supported by the current literature.
