In the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy, it is unclear what
percentage of patients with HIV infection will develop nutritional is
sues, including weight loss, diarrheal illness and anorexia. The purpo
se of this article is to discuss nutritional concerns that can occur w
ith HIV infection and potential treatment strategies. We have included
3 case studies identifying these issues and a nutritional assessment
guideline. Nutrition interventions, exercise recommendations, and othe
r alternative strategies to combat HIV associated weight loss is discu
ssed.
