Pillaring of the layered structure of alpha-zirconium phosphate by chr
omium(III) oxide has been performed by a new method involving preswell
ing of the layered substrate by n-propylamine vapours, followed by a c
olloidisation in a pH controlled medium, chromium(III) oligomer grafti
ng and calcination in N-2 at 673 K. Pure chromia-pillared alpha-zircon
ium phosphate and Li+-exchanged derivatives presented enhanced electri
cal conductivity in comparison with pristine alpha-zirconium phosphate
