This is the report of a pilot study which assessed the community preva
lence of personality disorders in the South of Mexico City. Methods. F
rom a representative sample of the total population of the selected ge
ographic zone we evaluated the first 98 cases in order to compare the
behavior of the two self-applied instruments selected: the Temperament
and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Personality Diagnosis Questionn
aire-revised (PDQR). Results: The TCI general prevalence of personalit
y disorders was 7.2 %, while the PDQR detected 28.6 % of the cases. We
also present the specific DSM-III-R personality disorder categories f
ound in each instrument. Conclusion: The ICI could be a better way of
evaluating personality disorders in a community sample in Mexico City,
as the PDQR overdiagnose the categories.
