Diffusion potential breaks the forward/backward symmetry of ions' move
ments in electrolyte solutions. For (he movements along with the conce
ntration gradient, forward, the faster ions are retarded and the slowe
r ones are accelerated to make cations and anions to move together. Fb
r the movements against the concentration gradient, backward, the fast
er ions are accelerated and the slower ones are retarded. Thus the dif
fusion potential differentiates markedly the forward and backward move
ments of ions.
