Different routes to tripod ligands CH3C(CH(2)C(5)H5)(CH2PR2')(CH2PR2 '
'), 5, containing a cyclopentadienyl unit and two additional donor gro
ups are described. The syntheses involve CH2OCH2C(CH3)(CH2C5H5), 2, or
CH3C(CH2Cl)(CH2Br)(CH2C5H5)(5) 12, respectively as intermediates. The
compounds 2 and 12 respectively are obtained from CH2OCH2(CH3)(CH2OSO
2CH3), 1, or CH3C(CH2Cl)(CH2Br)(CH2OSO2CF3), 11, by reaction with CpMg
Cl. The capability of the ligand 5 to coordinate to a transition metal
via all its three donor groups is documented by the analytical, spect
roscopical and X-ray structural characterisation of CH3C(CH2-eta(5)-C5
H4)(CH2PPh2)(2)Mn(CO), 13.
