The fullerene compound C-60, which exhibits a rather high electron aff
inity, undergoes an electron transfer reaction with the low-valent cob
alt(-I) complex Na[Co(CO)(4)] to form the black compound NaCoC60. 3THF
. The new material is characterized by elemental analyses, by IR, Rama
n, C-13 MAS-NMR and EPR spectroscopy, and by magnetic susceptibility m
easurements. It appears to contain covalent C-60-transition metal inte
ractions, and therefore constitutes a new type of bimetallic fulleride
compound. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
