Abstract
Radiation induced recharging of Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions in Ce and Nd doped yttrium-aluminium garnet crystals was observed. This effect depends on the Ce3+ ion concentration and the type of ionizing radiation. The cr ystals investigated were irradiated with gamma-rays, protons with flue nces up to 10(14) protons/cm(2) and electrons with a fluence of 5 x 10 (16) electrons/cm(2). Changes in cerium concentration after gamma-irra diation were calculated from the formula of Smakula. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
