Abstract
The main advantages in using heavy charged particles for tumor therapy compared to the conventional treatment using low-ionizing photon radi ation are discussed, with the emphasis on their different dose distrib ution and their biological effectiveness on cells. The present status of the Heavy Ion Therapy Programe at GSI is described.
