Recent advances in electrochemistry are presented as a tool for mechan
istic studies and synthesis of organometallic compounds. Special atten
tion is given to the use of microelectrodes, ultrafast cyclic voltamme
try, spectroelectrochemistry and digital simulation for mechanistic an
d thermodynamic studies. Electrochemically initiated electron transfer
chain catalysis is discussed as a synthetic method for selective subs
titution in clusters and binuclear compounds. The synthesis of organom
etallic compounds using sacrificial electrodes and the electrochemical
generation of organometallic catalysts useful in organic synthesis ar
e presented. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
