Abstract
The surgery exact sequence is used to show that if p is a Fermat prime the group SL(2,p) acts almost linearly on a sphere of dimension p - 2 , in the sense that the action restricts to a linear action on all pro per subgroups. This is then applied to the classification problem for free binary icosahedral actions in dimension 3.
