M. Altun et al., FRACTURE OF THE ULNAR SESAMOID OF THE METACARPOPHALANGEAL JOINT OF THE THUMB - A CASE-REPORT, Clinical anatomy, 11(1), 1998, pp. 60-61
Fracture of the thumb sesamoid bones is rare. We report here a fractur
e of the ulnar sesamoid in a 25-year-old man caused by a fall on his o
utstretched hand. He complained of pain and loss of thumb motion. Phys
ical examination revealed tenderness, swelling,, and a hematoma over t
he first metacarpal joint of the right thumb. Radiographs showed a fra
cture of the ulnar sesamoid which should not be confused with normal v
ariants that occasionally arise from ossifications centers that fail t
o unite. (C) 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
