The free vibration of a transmission line conductor equipped with a nu
mber of Stockbridge dampers is modelled by a differential equation of
motion of a tensioned beam acted on by concentrated frequency dependen
t forces,;and an exact solution is obtained using integral transformat
ion. By evaluation through aeolian vibration level computation, the ex
pressions obtained for the mode shapes can be easily used to predict a
ccurately the overall strains of lines in operation or under design. N
umerical examples show that the usual sinusoidal mode shapes can be si
gnificantly distorted by the dampers to give rise to dangerous strains
