The wide-spread non-metamorphic shales of the Ruyang Group (1150-950 M
a) in southern Shanxi, China contain abundant and well-preserved acrit
archs and filamentous microfossils, suggesting a shallow-marine deposi
tional environment. Acanthomorphic acritarchs obtained from both the B
aicaoping Formation and the Beidajian Formation of the Ruyang Group in
clude Shuiyousphaeridium Yan, emend. and a new genus Tappania Yin Lei-
ming, gen. nov. In addition, Shuiyousphaeridium macroreticulatum (Du)
Yan is emended and two new species Tappania plana Yin Lei-ming, sp. no
v. and T. tubata Yin Lei-ming, sp, nov. are described. (C) 1997 Elsevi
