Based on an analysis of the physical mechanism, a new model is develop
ed for the transitions for slug flow to churn flow in vertical pipes.
The transition is attributed to the wake effect of Taylor bubbles on h
ighly aerated liquid slugs. The new model is compared with existing mo
dels and published experimental data. It is in better agreement with e
