Abstract
By way of the PVD process, different metal-based ceramic coatings can be produced by changing the metal targets and reactive gases. In this report, TiN, TiCN and CrN are comparatively studied with respect to th eir wear performance, through wear simulation machine, under various e xperimental conditions. The results show that sliding pairs with CrN c oating possess much better wear resistance than the other two Ti-based coatings under both dry and lubricated conditions. The CrN coating is thus a potential candidate for replacing TiN and TiCN in certain appl ications. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
