The sorption of cobalt ion on calcium-montmorillonite was studied by t
he radioisotopic tracer method at different pH values. In dilute solut
ions the reaction has to be treated as a ternary exchange of cobalt, c
alcium, and hydrogen ions because of the high affinity of hydrogen ion
to montmorillonite. Equilibrium constant for calcium-hydrogen exchang
