This paper deals with the excitation of a symmetric TE0 mode by a Gaus
sian beam in a symmetric five-layered slab waveguide made of a self-de
focusing nonlinear layer sandwiched by two self-focusing nonlinear lay
ers. First, the analytical solution for the symmetric TE0 mode and the
relationship between the power and the effective index of refraction
are derived. Next, the propagating waveforms in the case of Gaussian b
eam incidence on waveguides with several different core thickness valu
es are derived by means of the finite difference beam propagation meth
od. By comparison of this solution with the analytical solution, examp
les of waveguides that enable excitation less likely to be affected by
the axial offset of the incident beam are found. The selection condit
ion for an incident beam width providing a high excitation efficiency
is obtained. Further, it is shown that in these waveguides the symmetr
ic TE0 mode can be more efficiently excited than in a three-layered sl
ab waveguide with self-focusing nonlinear core. (C) 1997 Scripta Techn
