This paper summarizes laboratory evaluations of roller-compacted concr
ete (RCC) subject to pure compression, pure tension, direct shear, ten
sion-shear, compression-shear, compression-compression-shear, and tens
ion-compression-shear tests. Results of conventional concrete specimen
s tested in a similar manner are also presented. Over 1000 specimens w
ere used in these tests. Based on the experimental data obtained, the
multiaxial shear strengths of RCC are given, which can be used as the
design basis for RCC dams. To carry our these tests, the authors desig
ned and installed a set of concrete triaxial apparatus that has proved
to have many advantages.
