Abstract
The delta-phase of LiV2O5 has been identified as an excellent candidat e material for the positive electrode in a lithium-ion battery. Transm ission electron microscopy (TEM) has shown, on the atomic level, that no major chemical bond breakage or basic structural changes occur duri ng the lithiation of V2O5 through the formation of the delta-phase. Th e stability of the crystal lattice during lithiation is expected to le ad to a secondary battery with a long cycle life and the performance c haracteristics of the lithium vanadium pentoxide in primary cells. The se characteristics include its excellent ability to be discharged at r elatively high rates and high temperature stability. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
