Abstract
We undertook the present study to evaluate the hypolipidaemic effect i n experimental diabetes of an aqueous extract of the seeds of Syzigium cumini, a plant indigenous in parts of India, South-East Asia and Eas tern Africa. Administration of the extract (5.0 g kg(-1) body weight) for 6 weeks resulted in significant reductions in blood glucose, serum and tissue lipids in alloxan diabetic rats. The extract was more effe ctive than glibenclamide in restoring these parameters. Insulin also r estored all the parameters to normal values.
