P. Evesque, STRESS IN STATIC SAND PILES - ROLE OF THE DEFORMATION IN THE CASE OF SILOS AND OEDOMETERS, Journal de physique. I, 7(12), 1997, pp. 1501-1512
Despite a few recent approaches, which may be viewed as continuation o
r rediscovery of ancient works, strain plays an important role in the
mechanics of granular materials. We give an example of the importance
of strain in the peculiar case of the Janssen theory of silos. A new m
ethod is proposed for calculating the constant k(silo) which relates h
orizontal to vertical stresses (sigma(v) = k(silo)sigma(h)). This appr
oach uses Rowe's law of dilatancy and the typical stress-strain behavi
ours of soil under monotorlous and cyclic loading. This k(silo) is com
pared with the experimental best fit which is known as the Jaky consta
nt, i.e. k(Jaky) = 1 - sin phi, where phi is the friction angle. It is
found that k(silo) lies quite near the experimental one k(Jaky) = 1-s
in phi.
