Aw. Fliflet et al., LOW-VOLTAGE INFRARED FREE-ELECTRON LASERS BASED ON GYROTRON-POWERED RF WIGGLERS, IEEE journal of quantum electronics, 33(5), 1997, pp. 669-676
Designs are presented for infrared free-electron lasers (FEL's) with g
yrotron-powered electromagnetic wigglers and relatively low voltage el
ectron beams, The use of an electromagnetic wiggler formed by a quasi-
optical gyrotron, where the radiation is coupled into a corrugated wav
eguide, has the potential for substantial increases of FEL gain compar
ed to an open mirror system, Designs for proof-of-principle low-voltag
e infrared FEL experiments based on both radio-frequency (RF) linear a
ccelerator and electrostatic accelerator technology are presented toge
ther with point designs for portable systems covering the infrared win
dows in the atmosphere.
