The magnetic properties of unoccupied electronic states of Pt films gr
own on Fe(001) have been investigated by means of spin-resolved invers
e photoemission. Interface and overlayer derived states are clearly id
entified, while their polarization dependence indicates a ferromagneti
c coupling between Pt and Fe. The magnetic moment induced in the film
remains, however, confined at the interface and polarization effects d
isappear above similar to 5 Pt atomic layers. The persistence of inter
face derived states in thicker films points towards the formation of a
nonabrupt interface.
