The use of immunomagnetic separation (IMS) techniques has been reporte
d to reduce the total test time and improve the sensitivity of microbi
ological tests done on foods. This study demonstrates the ability of t
he Dynabeads(TM) immunomagnetic separation system, to enable detection
of a few cells of E. coli O157:H7 in 25g of inoculated raw minced bee
f after enrichment in modified tryptone soy broth (MTSB) incubated at
42 degrees C for only 4 hours. Compared to CHROMagar E. coli O157, sor
bitol Mac-Conkey agar supplemented with cefixime and tellurite (CT-SMA
C) was shown to be a better subculture medium.
