Abstract
The use of coal as fuel was, until recently, by far the most important source of particulate matter in Beijing. Increased intensity of traff ic contributes to the emission of especially smaller particles at an i ncreasing rate. The fraction of inhalable and respirable particulate m atter in the total amount of suspended particulate matter has increase d snbstantially.
