This study explores the role of attitude heritability in connection wi
th attitude change as a result of attitude discrepant behavior. Thirty
four subjects were given high or low choice to write an essay which w
as discrepant from either a high heritability attitude or a low herita
bility attitude. High heritability attitudes were more resistant to ch
ange than low heritability attitudes. Attitude change was associated w
ith greater electrodermal responding and faster heart rate for high he
ritability attitudes but not for low heritability attitudes. (C) 1998
