Abstract
In this review, we demonstrate that the Pummerer reaction can be utili zed for the preparation of complex carbocyclic and heterocyclic ring s ystems. The generation of thionium ions from sulfoxides and their subs equent inter-or intramolecular reactions with pi-bonds as an entry to complex ring systems is described in some detail.
