Uterine inversion is a rare complication of the immediate postpartum a
nd puerperal periods. It is associated with symptoms such as pain, vag
inal bleeding and cardiovascular failure. Vaginal inspection will usua
lly yield the diagnosis. This does not apply to partial inversio uteri
. In this case, the region of inversion is localised cranial to the ut
erine cervix and is thus mostly not accessible for inspection. The cas
e described demonstrates that such a complication may account for a fo
rmerly assumed atonic bleeding. Important steps in treating all uterin
e inversions are reposition of uterus, management of cardiovascular fa
ilure and prevention of subsequent complications such as infection and
recurrences.
