Abstract
From the roots of Rudbeckia fulgida, var. sullivantii (BOYNTON et BEAD LE), a homogeneous polysac charide has been isolated by water extracti on and subsequent ion-exchange chromatography and gel filtration of th e crude mixture of polysaccharides. Its molar composition determined b y NMR and HPLC analyses was found to be D-fructose and D-glucose in th e ratio 26 : 1. The results of methylation analysis and H-1 and C-13 N MR spectral measurements showed that the polysaccharide is a (2 --> 1) -beta-D-fructofuranan of the inulin type.
