A single crystal of N-ethyl-N-9-triptycylacetamide contains the Z- and
E-isomers in a ratio of 1:1. The amide nitrogen atom in either isomer
is significantly pyramidalized. Either of the isomers in solution is
shown to adopt a similar conformation with the pyramidal nitrogen as i
n the crystalline state.
