Ej. Mertzfairhurst et al., ULTRACONSERVATIVE AND CARIOSTATIC SEALED RESTORATIONS - RESULTS AT YEAR 10, The Journal of the American Dental Association, 129(1), 1998, pp. 55-66
Changes in restorative techniques and the development of newer restora
tive materials have allowed for the use of more conservative cavity pr
eparations. This 10-year study evaluated bonded and sealed composite r
estorations placed directly over frank cavitated lesions extending int
o dentin vs. sealed conservative amalgam restorations and conventional
unsealed amalgam restorations. The results indicate that both types o
f sealed restorations exhibited superior clinical performance and long
evity compared with unsealed amalgam restorations. Also, the bonded an
d sealed composite restorations placed over the frank cavitated lesion
s arrested the clinical progress of these lesions for 10 years.
