One model for highly anisotropic high temperature superconductors (HTS
) due to their layered structure is a series stack of Josephson juncti
ons. The hysteretic nature of c-axis transport characteristics in vari
ous HTS as well as the observation of ac Josephson effect support such
a view. In this report, we examine the vortex flow behavior for appli
ed fields parallel to the layers under c-axis transport currents. It i
s shown that the nature of vortex flow is consistent with that of Jose
phson vortices propagating along layered superconductors. In addition,
some aspects of vortex flow characteristics show specific features co
mmonly observed in low damped junctions. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V
