Salt contamination of steel surfaces is frequently encountered during
construction and commissioning of power plant. NNC has attempted to de
fine the maximum allowable limits depending on the substrate and subse
quent use. In particular, two research programmes are discussed here.
One, the incidence of stress corrosion cracking and intergranular atta
ck of stainless steel exposed to a moist air. The second, a 6 1/2-year
exposure to the atmospheric environment of alkyd paints applied to pr
e-contaminated carbon steel.
