Cc. Tsao et Wc. Chen, EFFECTS OF CUTTING PARAMETERS ON THE SCALLOP SIZE DURING THE MILLING PROCESSES, Journal of materials processing technology, 72(2), 1997, pp. 208-213
The effects of cutting parameters on the scallops generated in machini
ng are investigated in this paper. An analytical approach is also prop
osed to correlate the radius of the tool cutter and the radius of the
machined workpiece for the milling of three-dimensional spherical surf
aces on a conventional three-axis CNC machine tool. Experiments cre pe
rformed to check the validity of this analytical approach, the experim
ental results showing that the roundness of the machined surfaces is b
est when the radius of the tool cutter is half the radius of the machi
ned workpiece for the milling of both three-dimensional internal and e
xternal hemispherical surfaces on a conventional three-axis CNC machin
e tool. Furthermore, optimal cutting conditions and processes are sugg
ested for reducing the scallop size generated in machining.
