Haemophilus aphrophilus is rarely implicated as an aetiology of spinal
epidural abscess. A 73-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis who develo
ped H. aphrophilus bacteraemia complicated with vertebral osteomyeliti
s and spinal epidural abscess is presented, Without surgical decompres
sion, she was successfully treated with cefotaxime for 3 weeks, follow
ed by maintenance with ciprofloxacin for another 10 weeks. The clinica
l features of eight previously reported cases of vertebral osteomyelit
is without epidural abscess due to H. aphrophilus are reviewed.
