The Sigma 5 (210)/[001] symmetric tilt grain boundary in yttrium alumi
num garnet (YAG) was produced by diffusion bonding precisely oriented
single crystals. The crystals were cleaned and bonded in an ultra-high
-vacuum environment, The atomic structure of the boundary was characte
rized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Model atomi
c structures were created by geometric construction to form the coinci
dent site lattice model boundary, Comparison of model structures with
high-resolution micrographs was performed by high-resolution image sim
ulation. Many aspects of the boundary structure were properly represen
ted by the models, but some details of the high-resolution images indi
cated that differences existed.
