A new miniature double-shear testing procedure is introduced for the t
esting of semibrittle materials such as intermetallics. Detailed exper
iments on samples of pure Al and an Al-5 pct Mg solid solution alloy c
onfirm that the miniature configuration provides consistent and reliab
le results when using either a circular ora square cross section. In a
ddition, it is demonstrated that the data obtained using miniature spe
cimens are consistent with results from conventional large double-shea
r specimens and from specimens tested under tensile conditions. The mi
niature testing technique is used to provide preliminary mechanical da
ta on a Ni-45 pct Al-5 pct Fe intermetallic.
